The captain of a cargo ship has been arrested after his vessel collided with an oil tanker in the North Sea. The incident involved the Portuguese-flagged Solong and the US-registered Stena Immaculate, which crashed off the East Yorkshire coast at approximately 10:00 GMT on Monday 10th March 2025. The Police confirmed the arrest of the 59-year-old captain on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. This followed an extensive search for a missing crew member from the Solong, who is now presumed dead after the search and rescue operation concluded on Monday evening.

Despite smoke continuing to rise from the Solong, it is expected that both ships are expected to remain afloat. The German company Ernest Russ, which owns the the vessel, confirmed to the BBC that the arrested individual is the ship’s captain. The captain and the rest of the crew are cooperating with the investigation. One crew member from the Solong remains missing and is presumed dead. The Solong’s crew includes Russians and Filipinos, while all 23 crew members aboard the Stena Immaculate are Americans. The American crew members are currently in Grimsby and are expected to be repatriated in due course.

Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the cause of the collision, with Humberside Police collaborating with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch is also conducting a parallel preliminary assessment to determine the factors that led to the crash.
